Hammond v Blackstock [2023] NSWDC 51
We were saddened to read of yet another horrible outcome for a woman who had undergone a breast augmentation by notorious cosmetic surgeon, Dr Leslie Blackstock.
Dr Blackstock had his medical registration suspended for seven years in October 2017 after a litany of complaints were made against him in relation to cosmetic surgeries performed on hundreds of women which left them significantly impaired and disfigured.
Background
In this case, the woman (referred to as the plaintiff) elected to undergo a breast augmentation procedure to improve her appearance after giving birth to her three children. The procedure was performed in September 2016. Post-operatively, the plaintiff was in excruciating pain, her breasts were significantly oversized, and she suffered a great deal of psychological distress. She required corrective surgery,
An expert opinion was obtained from a plastic surgeon with respect to the standard of care that Dr Blackstock provided to the plaintiff. The expert was highly critical of the sanitisation of the operating room, Dr Blackstock’s surgical technique, Dr Blackstock’s inappropriate management of the woman’s post-operative infection, and the fact that Dr Blackstock performed the surgery despite having inadequate training and expertise.
Decision
The Court found in favour of the woman and awarded her significant compensation.
