- Ovarian torsion is when the ovary twists around the ligaments that hold it in place. This can cause the blood supply to the ovary to be cut off. According to a recent study, It is most common in women of reproductive age with three quarters of cases occurring in women under 30. Ovarian torsion is a medical emergency because if blood supply to the ovary is restricted for too long, the ovary can become necrotic and the tissue die.
- Early symptoms of ovarian torsion include sharp pelvic pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, and occasional bleeding. The presentation of women with ovarian torsion can vary and many of the symptoms of ovarian torsion can be associated with other conditions, and so it is not uncommon for it to be misdiagnosed.
- It is important for doctors to consider ovarian torsion as a possible diagnosis and take steps to confirm or exclude it. It is also important for radiologists reporting on ultrasounds of women who may be suspected of ovarian torsion to take care when reviewing the scans for signs of ovarian torsion, and to advise the patient and the patient’s treating doctors immediately if ovarian torsion is suspected.
- We receive many enquiries from women who have suffered ovarian torsion which was misdiagnosed, not properly investigated, not treated quickly enough or not treated appropriately.
