A call for better sepsis care
We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Geelong man, Brian Dean, who died from sepsis following his discharge from Geelong Hospital.
On 1 July 2023, Brian went to Geelong Hospital with flu-like symptoms. He stayed overnight in the short stay unit and was discharged the next morning. By midnight that same day, his condition had worsened. He returned to hospital and was diagnosed with septic shock. He died a few hours later.
Medical experts reviewing the case say that if Brian had been given antibiotics during his initial hospital stay, he likely would have survived. His family is calling for a coronial inquest to understand how this happened — and to stop it from happening again.
What Is Sepsis?
Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to infection. It’s a medical emergency that requires urgent treatment. If not treated quickly — often with intravenous antibiotics and fluids — it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.
The signs of sepsis can be subtle and are sometimes mistaken for less serious illnesses. That’s why early recognition is critical. A delay in diagnosis or treatment can have fatal consequences.
