Important health update for those affected
A recent health alert has been issued by NSW Health, impacting hundreds of women and children who gave birth at the Nepean Hospital Birth Unit between 2013 and 2024. The alert concerns potential exposure to hepatitis B due to a healthcare worker being infectious over an 11-year period.
NSW Health has apologised to over 300 women and children who may have been at risk, reassuring the community that the risk of transmission is low. The Blood Borne Viruses Advisory Panel has reviewed the situation and confirmed that only certain procedures performed by the infected healthcare worker posed a potential risk.
The Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) is offering free testing and assessment to 223 women and 143 children who were at risk of exposure. The focus is particularly on patients who had an episiotomy, repair of an episiotomy or vaginal tear, or those who had foetal scalp electrodes applied by the healthcare worker in question. These individuals will be contacted directly.
Hepatitis B is a serious liver disease caused by a virus that can be transmitted through blood-to-blood contact, during birth, or through sexual transmission. However, not all individuals exposed to the virus will develop the disease. A simple blood test can confirm whether someone is infected or has had the virus in the past.
Fortunately, there is a vaccine that provides excellent protection against hepatitis B. If detected early, there are treatments available to manage the disease and prevent serious long-term complications. Those affected are urged to seek testing and advice from their healthcare provider, and a dedicated support line is available at 1800 716 662.
NSW Health and the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District have worked to ensure that the healthcare worker is no longer at risk of infecting others, and have assured all patients that the hospital continues to provide high-quality care in a safe birthing environment.
